When we feed our joy, more joy becomes available to us.

I’ve always loved swimming. As a child and teenager I swam in the local swimming club, joined the lifesaving club, had a spell of synchronised swimming and eventually became a pool lifeguard from 16-22 when I left uni and got a grad job.

I’m an Aquarian – the water bearer. People confuse us as a water sign because of this but we are actually an air sign. I love being an Aquarian and I love water.

Connection to water

There’s something about my connection to water that I can’t articulate. At the hight of my joy I’m swimming in the sea. But in motherhood I have struggled to have a regular swimming practice.

I came to 2023 with a simple intention – to swim twice a week. 32 lengths and 30 minutes of bliss and absolute solitude. Solitude is sparse in parenthood so it is cup filling in many ways.

My weekly practice has been going well, I’ve enjoyed the routine and I feel energised every time I go.

I also keep forgetting to buy some goggles. Without them I’m forever opening and closing my eyes which changes the experience a bit. Every time I think “I must buy some goggles for my next swim” and then the 30 minutes is done, normal life resumes and I forget.

Goggles for the win

So when my sister bought me an early birthday present I was absolutely made up to be handed a new pair of goggles. I was turning 37 and that gift gave me an insight to take with me in to my next year… When we feed our joy more joy becomes available to us.

When we feed our joy

I went for my first swim with my new goggles and as I pushed through the water I could see rays of sunlight flashing through the pool. I watched as the bubbles of my breath escaped to the surface before they disappeared and the whole experience with goggles awakened even more of my senses. I felt more present, more joyful, more alive. I could feel myself smiling as I swam.

I might have looked a bit nuts out there but I felt great.

Just like a fire our joy has the potential to burn brighter if we keep feeding it. If you are feeling disconnected from your joy, maybe now is a good time to invite some space and time to think about your energy and to start making an inner connection. I have an exercise that might help you with this.

If you get to the end of the exercise and you want to continue that exploration with me as a coach then you can find out more about my coaching practice Wavespace Coaching.

I hope you find your goggle equivalent and more joy opens up in your life.
